Foodliner/Quest Liner's Road to Success
How Optimizing the Lubricant Program has assisted
Foodliner / Quest Liner with improving productivity
and reducing the total cost of operation.
The Foodliner/Quest Liner and CITGO
Lubricants business partnership began
11 years ago with the objective of
optimizing lubricant service intervals.
At that time, Foodliner/Quest Liner
was operating approximately 800
power units with Cummins, Mack and
Detroit Diesel engines. Today, they
operate over 1,200 power units that
are primarily Detroit Diesel 13 liter
engines. At the outset of implementing
the lubricant program, their earlier
goal was to safely go from 24,000 mile
oil changes to 48,000-mile oil changes,
while protecting engine durability and
not incur increased maintenance costs
with engine repairs. Kyle Neumann,
the Maintenance Director, knows that
maintaining the engine protection and
safeguarding engine durability are
the primary objective that must be
achieved without compromise.
To accomplish this, Neumann elected
to use CITGARD 700 Synthetic Blend

heavy-duty engine oil SAE 15W-40
combined with the CITGO LubeAlert
Oil Analysis program. Neumann set up
his maintenance schedules to take a
sample at 24,000 miles, or what is the
dry maintenance, and a follow-up oil
sample at the 48,000 mile oil change.
This would help to build a database that
would ensure that both the oil condition
and the engine wear protection was
trending in a manner that clearly
showed the level of engine protection
needed to ensure engine durability.
Thinking back to that first
year of initiating the program,
Neumann reported, "The benefit of
implementing this program resulted in
a $250,000 savings the first year right
out of the gate!"
In 2013, Neumann elected to convert
the fleet to CITGARD 700 Synthetic
Blend SAE 10W-30 to gain both
additional fuel savings and maintain
the 48,000-mile oil change intervals.

Based on positive oil condition trends
from oil samples taken at 24,000 mile
intervals, the program was upgraded
to 72,000 mile oil changes. Neumann
will continue to evaluate the engine
change interval capability beyond the
72,000 miles in an effort to optimize oil
change intervals and reduce the total
cost of the operation.
The continued success of the
lubricant program to the present
day has resulted in Neumann taking
advantage of yet another opportunity
by changing his Detroit Diesel fleet to
CITGARD API FA-4 10W-30 engine oil,
which further optimizes fuel efficiency
while maintaining the 72,000-mile oil
change intervals.

54 Fleet Maintenance | September 2019

Kyle Neumann and Foodliner/Quest
Liner represent a fleet that has, and
continues to operate, a cutting-edge
maintenance program. Neumann
has embraced CITGARD 700 highperformance lubricant technologies
and integrated oil analysis into
their state-of-the-art maintenance
practices. He recommends that fleets
explore the potential that exists today
with CITGO lubricant technology like
CITGARD 700 and Lube Alert, which
can provide real cost savings and
contribute to reducing the total cost of
fleet operations.
