All-Electric HVAC Efficiency Critical
for Extended Battery Bus Range
The zero-emission bus is powered by
batteries, and all of the electrical loads,
like the all-electric HVAC, use power from
the battery. On conventional buses, the
HVAC is the largest single load on the
engine. Now, that load is on the battery
and affects how far the bus can go on a
single charge.
Thermo King offers a complete line
of high efficiency all-electric, hermetically sealed HVAC units for battery-bus,
hybrid-bus, trolley-bus and engine-driven
alternator-powered applications. All-electric HVAC delivers clean, efficient heating,
ventilation and air conditioning comfort
for passengers using hermetically sealed
electric scroll compressors, two stages of
electric heat and variable frequency control of the compressor and air movers.

Thermo King's all-electric systems
feature a rugged, transit duty design for
exceptional durability and ease of installation. The systems come from the factory
pre-charged with high-capacity, environmentally friendly R-407C refrigerant. All
pipes and fittings are enclosed within the
system. The absence of hoses and fittings
external to the unit drastically improves
reliability and lowers maintenance costs
and overall life-cycle costs.
The variable frequency control for
the electric compressor features a
wide frequency range, which provides
enough power at the higher frequencies
to meet the pull-down specifications,
and at the lower frequencies power
consumption is reduced to meet the
load demand for the cabin. This pow-

er management strategy ensures that
power is only used when needed, similar
to the power saver mode on your home
appliances or laptop computer.
No power management strategy is
complete without a programmable and
configurable microprocessor. The Thermo
King IntelligAire III advanced microprocessor controller is capable of reading
pressure and temperature transducers,
controlling frequency, making decisions
to adjust the loads based on the demand
for cooling, and the ability to communicate with the other onboard systems so
intelligent decisions, like adjusting the
thermostat set point, can be made.
Thermo King, a leading HVAC supplier
to the North American Transit market, has
been providing value-added solutions for
buses since 1956. Thermo King offers a
complete line of custom designed products that help protect our environment,
while adding value to our customers. To

EFFICIENT ALL-ELECTRIC SOLUTIONS
ALL-ELECTRIC HVAC EFFICIENCY:
Efficiency can be measured. Efficiency can be calculated.
But efficiency should never be claimed without supporting data.
