Mass Transit - R7

Congratulations to SEPTA, 2nd Commuter Rail
Operator in Nation to Fully Implement PTC
The Rail Safety Act of 2008 mandated
all rail operators implement life-saving
safety systems that would stop collisions
and avoid train derailments resulting
from speed and signal violations. Left
without either the recommended technology or the funding to implement, transit
agencies like SEPTA were on their own to
find solutions and strategies to meet the
nationwide federal mandate.
SEPTA's 13-line Regional Rail system
is extremely sophisticated and complex,
spanning 474 track miles and five counties. Up against an aggressive schedule
to meet the 2018 deadline, SEPTA worked
with Ansaldo (a Hitachi Company) - with
Burns as a subcontractor - to develop and
implement this new technology. SEPTA's
new PTC system - comprised of a network

of seamlessly integrated smart communication systems - is interoperable with
other trains, increases system reliability
and redundancy, and ensures the safety
of the traveling public. SEPTA was just the
second commuter rail operator in the nation to fully implement PTC, and helped set
the standards for commuter rail interoperability with Amtrak's ACSES system. "Providing improved safety for our customers
through PTC has been a game changer",
said Jeffrey Knueppel, General Manager
of SEPTA. Knueppel added "Burns' strong
engineering performance on SEPTA's PTC
program was a key factor in our success."
SEPTA's PTC Implementation was
awarded an Engineering Excellence Award
by the American Council of Engineering
Companies of Pennsylvania, and received

(ADU). The ADU is the primary
visual interface between the vehicle
operator and the train control
systems, and forms the operator's

national recognition at the 2019 ACEC
Engineering Excellence Awards Gala in
Washington, DC. Burns is proud to have
contributed to the success of this important infrastructure project. Congratulations
to the entire team!
