Phase 1 of the BART Silicon Valley
Extension to open June 13
Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) trains will begin service on Milpitas and
Berryessa/North San Jose Stations on June 13. The new service is part of
the first phase of the 10-mile BART Silicon Valley Extension, which will
be operated and maintained by BART and was constructed and is owned
by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA). Construction
on the extension broke ground in 2012 and control was handed to BART
in July 2019. BART and Santa Clara VTA leaders signed the Project Safety
and Security Certificate on May 19, which was the final project requirement
prior to revenue service starting.

Slight deviation in steering caused
sudden stop incident of AV shuttle
▶ The

sudden stop of an autonomous
vehicle in Ohio on Feb. 20 was caused
by a slight deviation in the steering of
the vehicle, according to Smart Columbus, which oversees the shuttle project. Smart Columbus explains sudden
stops in autonomous vehicles can be
caused by many factors and the entity is
working with its partners to reduce the
risk of these occurrences but noted the
incidents cannot be eliminated entirely.
EasyMile, which supplied the shuttle, has
been cleared to begin U.S. operations.
Additional safety enhancements that include seatbelts and passenger instruction
will be implemented on the shuttles.
