Sustainability Program Manager
Alexander Traversa has been with the
JTA five years and has advanced key initiatives
in the areas of environmental and sustainability
planning, Transit Oriented Development (TOD)
and improving equitable access to the COVID19
vaccine.
Traversa developed a comprehensive sustainability
action plan that was adopted
by the JTA Board to become the strategic
vision for the sustainability program office.
The plan outlines 15 goals and 23 projects
that aim to address six key focus areas.
Traversa also helps lead the implementation
of JTA's TOD policy. He currently oversees the
TOD Pilot Program that is analyzing what types
of developments or land uses can best support
transit service in the downtown area and
around the Ultimate Urban Circulator system.
In October 2020, Traversa spearheaded an
internal task force, the VAX Trans Committee,
to lead the authority's initiative to provide
equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
The key objective was to develop service
operation plans that would provide equitable
access to the city's vaccination sites. An early
milestone for the committee was the development
of a data tracking system to maintain
up-to-date vaccination data. Traversa and the

committee then led the development and
continued management of the mobile vaccine
unit, Wellness on Wheels, in partnership with
AGAPE Family Health. This resulted in 6,681
people getting vaccinated. Traversa further
expanded JTA's vaccine initiative by brokering
an agreement with Uber to develop a
voucher program, which resulted in a total of
4,000 subsidized rides to vaccination sites.
Under Traversa's leadership, the committee
also developed programs to target greater
employee participation. The committee
worked with JTA Marketing Department to
conduct awareness campaigns, including a
designated service to take employees to vaccination
sites as requested. Because of this, 33
percent more of the workforce was vaccinated.
Fast Fact: Traversa utilized a contactless
public involvement tool for public outreach,
which increased participation by 40 percent
and is now part of the community engagement
process.
