One point drawn from these focus groups was that transit is not
viewed as particularly unsafe in the
sense that attendees viewed public
transit as equally safe or unsafe as
any other enclosed space, such as
stores or other private businesses.
While rider safety concerns
during the pandemic are a challenge, the wellbeing of employees
is also under stress. NYU School
of Global Public Health conducted
a pilot study published in October 2020 to better understand the
impact on New York City Transit
(NYCT) workers.
The NYU pilot study found
24 percent of NYCT workers
self-reported having contracted
COVID-19 and 76 percent personally knew a coworker who died
from the virus. Concerns about
getting sick at work were high,
with 90 percent of respondents
saying they were more fearful of
the virus at work versus outside
of work. And 70 percent reported
fearing for their safety at work. This
concern was not around contagion,
but rather negative interaction with
