Why ALI Certification Matters
When Buying Car Lifts
W
hile you'll find a number of different lift styles,
sizes, designs and capacities out there, it's important
to consider purchasing an Atlas lift certified by the
Auto Lift Institute (ALI). Of course, there are uncertified
lifts on the market, too, so why does that ALI stamp of
approval mean so much?
What is ALI?
ALI (Automotive Lift
Institute) governs
the safety standards for
automotive lifts in the United
States. ALI Certified lifts must
all pass the exact same testing,
material and operational standards.
This testing covers the structural
integrity, proper control function
and even overloading the lift beyond its rated capacity. The
procedures are PASS/FAIL. Either you get the ALI Certified sticker, or
you do not. All brands of Certified Lifts are all subject to the exact
same ALI production and testing standards.
Why is ALI Certification Important?
Certification is a system in which an independent, third-party
organization determines that a manufacturer can produce a product
that complies with a specific set of standards. Program participants
such as Atlas are required to be audited quarterly to ensure continued
compliance with ALI's standards. This ensures consistency in design
and peace of mind for the shop owner or technician.
What Does Testing Involve?
ALI rigorously tests all the lifts sponsored by manufacturers. Testing
involves pushing the lift to 1.5 times its weight capacity to ensure
complete structural strength. It also involves
cycling the lift load several times
at 150% beyond capacity.
It's all about ensuring
that lifts live up
to their capacity
claims, and that a
10,000-lb.-capacity
lift should be able
to lift and hold a
vehicle weighing
10,000 lbs. without
bending or breaking. It's
about protecting against
damage to the lift, damage
to the vehicle on the lift,
or injury or death to the
mechanic using the lift.
