Smoke Machines Make It Easy
to Identify EVAP System Leaks
K-Tool XD 600T Turbo, use either ordinary mineral or baby oil; other
machines may use air or colored dye rather than oil to create smoke.
You'll also need access to your shop's air lines or nitrogen machine.
Finally, connect the machine to the EVAP purge solenoid. The smoke
machine will inject smoke/air into the EVAP system, allowing you to
locate the leak.
Leaks will be visible by smoke issuing from the cracked line or failed
fitting. Once you've made the necessary replace, clear the codes and
test drive the vehicle.

hile smoke machines have been around for a while,
they have only recently become a common piece
of equipment in a shop. In fact, many mechanics have
worked in shops for years without ever using one. A
smoke machine is a fairly simple tool to use and it may
just become your favorite diagnostic tool.
The first step in diagnosing an issue with a vehicle's EVAP system is to
connect your OBD II scanner and download the error codes. If it turns
out either a minor or major emissions system leak, you can use a
smoke machine to quickly and efficiently uncover the leak, especially
if there is not an obvious problem with the gas cap or its gasket.
How do smoke machines work?
Smoke machines can be connected to the emissions hose running
to the rear of the vehicle; be sure to block the line by crimping it
closed with vice grips. The smoke machine can connect right to the
car's battery terminals using its clamps to draw operating power.
You simply fill the machine with the smoke-producing material
