My boss has been bringing his friend’s dog in the office while he’s dog sitting. Although the dog is very small (7lbs.) it’s still a dog in what’s suppose to be a professional dental practice! Some patients have made comments about how unsanitary it is and still he continues to bring it to work. I’ve already expressed to him how I don’t think it’s the place for a dog and how he’s going to lose patients because of it. I’d like to know what kind of laws, if any, there are and just what to do about it. The dog has even pooped in an operatory while the dentist was working on a patient! n JAN 27 2012 shazammer1 Member Since: 12/20/00 Post: 2 of 18 Your boss will not budge until he hears it from the patients. And the patients won’t say anything except to their friends and the rest of the town. You have to truly be a dog maniac to think this is even one percent OK. Some patient will have to go into a sneezing fit from allergies to make him pay attention. Is he crazy? OSHA would have a field day. I had three of them, but dogs in doctors’ offices, no! And one that pooped in the operatory, no way! But we have one patient with a teeny wee cutie dog – toy size, which she carries inside a little “house.” She will even have it with her in the op on her lap. The thing isn’t free and has no inclination to leave the portable house, though its little golf-ball-sized head sticks out. I gotta admit, it is very cute and it never crossed my mind to think about kicking this particular dog out. n JAN 30 2012 Ardh Member Since: 11/04/06 Post: 12 of 18 My DDS has a small 10-pound dog that she brings with her to the office every day for the past eight years I have worked with her. Before she initially brought the dog to the office she contacted the State Dental Board asking if it was an OSHA violation. The response was absolutely not as long as the dog does not venture into patient treatment areas. The dog is extremely well-behaved and spends most of her day sleeping on the doc’s couch. But regularly patients ask to see the dog, especially children. Petting this happy dog brings a sense of relaxation for so many of our patients.
