Perio Protocol Perio Question? Need Help With Perio Protocol For New Practice! Perio Question We all know Rod Kurthy is famous for his KoR whitening system (which I use and love), but back in 2003 he also wrote a book called "Rod's Incredible Non-Surgical Perio Protocol With or Without a Laser." I see a lot of patients with periodontal disease in my practice, and I've never really had a solid protocol for predictably treating patients and maintaining their condition. I mean, scaling and root planing, fine scales, perio maintenance visits and home care instructions ... that's what we were doing, but nothing rock solid. And it was frustrating to go through all that and have patients come back in with crappy home care, or if they did have good home care there would be unpredictable results with pocketing. So if you've used KoR whitening, you know that it is very specific. Rod is clear that you must do things a very specific way if you want to get the desired results. That's what drew me toward his perio protocol. I wanted something so tremendously specific that there would be no room for failure. So last summer I purchased Rod's book, and over three months my hygiene team and I met once a week and read the book together. Then we purchased all the products and implemented all the techniques. We had a trial period during which we did treatments at no cost in order to test everything out, and just to be clear-after a few weeks with the exact technique from the book, we did tweak (remix) a few things to better fit our practice, but we can discuss that later. Once we were set on our specific protocol, we put together a booklet for patients to take home and read. The patients also use this booklet as a guide for homecare instructions and where to get the necessary products for maintenance. We also packaged together all the products that patients are expected to buy, and had custom bags made to sell them in (it's really cheap to have those custom reusable grocery bags made with your own logo, and it's a great giveaway!). Since implementing this, we've seen awesome results. I can't even express it. In Rod's book, he says something about how he was shocked about the results at first, and he's so right. The first few fine scale appointments, my hygienist said she got the chills when she recorded the probing depths! I cannot thank Rod enough for putting together this protocol-I can't believe it's not more popular. On the other hand, I feel that my hygienists and I have put together a great booklet that is a great way to get patients on board. Anyway, I usually don't contribute very much to Dentaltown, but I thought sharing this would be a good way to change that! I've attached our periodontal management booklet if you'd like to read it over. We can also discuss the specific techniques, appointments, codes, etc., and products associated with this method.
