I would call the denturist and thank them for the chance you have to coordinate treatment
with them. They might not have referred the patient to your office, but if you do this, they might
start referring patients to you. I would love to have a situation where I had patients referred to me
for extraction, and then I never have to deal with the denture adjustments. That is dental nirvana
to me. ■

Man, you guys are pretty paranoid. I deliver immediates after exits (we have denturists here in
Washington). I have no problem making minor adjustments during immediate insertion, but I let
the patients know ahead of time that all other adjustments, etc., need to be with denturist.
No, the patient is not going to sue/ream you for inserting a bad denture. No, you do not "own"
the denture by delivering it. Come on, guys, let's not be reasonable-it's the denturist's ownership. ■

Thanks, good responses. Sounds like the key is to talk to the denturist and talk to the patient
so everyone has realistic expectations. I'll do that then go ahead and deliver. If I end up in dental
hell, then I guess the paranoid guys can say, "Told ya so!" ■

Asking this at the risk of sounding like a moron: What the heck is a denturist? ■

A denturist is health care professional who is not university-educated. It is one step below-like
a plumber, for example. They go to denturist schools where they end up having a degree to do
dentures, and now they can also do removable stuff on implants and bleaching. They have a board
like us. They do not have the title of doctor, but they are fighting for it.
Each area has a board and the rules may vary from area to area, same as for dentists.
It is typical to deliver a denture made by a denturist on the day of the extractions and you
may alter the denture lightly at least for it to slip into place. The denturist I have worked with in
my area, his stuff always slips in without any adjustments. He handles the rest. I have never had
a problem or a comeback from him regarding me having messed up his dentures. He is a good
source of referral of extractions. ■

This sounds like a win-you get to do the most profitable part and lose the headache. I would
ask for a surgical guide so you know where to remove the bone, if needed. Do a nice job and hope
they send you more cases. ■

I'll take a mouth full of easy extractions and not dealing with a denture all day long, every
day. I would thank him for the referral and hope for more. The ownership with that denture is
zero at my office. Goodbye, crazy denture patient. ■
