I am using a Canon SLR with two continual light source soft boxes for the "after" photos.
My settings are ISO600 and f/16. The filtered soft-box light does give the afters a different look
compared with the befores.
Subtle contrasting and lighting post-production is used to highlight the effects, but I intentionally do not attempt to alter the result to present a product that is untrue. Here is a video
taken with my smartphone, immediately after treatment, of one of the cases I just posted, so that
you can compare it with the fidelity of the presentation photos.

BigWave007, thank you for your comment. Sorry for the confusion. I imagine you must be
referring to an earlier comment where I was comparing the time I allot for this type of direct
cases (10 hours total) versus what I use to allot for my porcelain indirect cases (8 hours total),
which did involve prep, seat, etc. This is all real direct composite :) and there is no "prep and
seat" for this direct protocol.
I use the same settings and lighting for all the post-treatment photos, and I use the same
recipe (same composite, same steps, designed after my own wax-up and anatomical preferences)
so they do have a very similar appearance, which is the predictability that I am after.
Thank you, Terry. It does take time and practice, but I think those who are motivated by
noninvasive cosmetic dentistry are getting really good results as well and building their confidence with these type of cases for the benefit of their patients.
Mandm_Sudz: I do use different but consistent lighting and settings for the "after" photos
(for a more dramatic look so, yes, it is currently intentional). They do look very similar also
because I use the same steps, the same composite, and I fashion the anatomy to my particular
preference guided by the wax design that I do. I like a certain anatomy and smile design features,
so I work them to that end in each case.
I feel so passionate about the benefits of smile enhancement for those who feel insecure in
their smile-together with noninvasive treatment options that I have refined and simplified a
"recipe" for these type of cases.
Those doctors who are motivated and that have attended my courses or shadowed me doing
these cases are also getting great results. It does take a system and dedicated practice, but I have
seen that a doctor need not be a brilliant artist to achieve excellence with this type of case. ■

Beautiful restorative treatments using composite resin! I would like to see 2-year posttreatment images. I used to place many similar treatments, but have had a few cases fail and tend
toward indirect ceramic veneers now. ■

I absolutely love composite direct nonprep smile enhancement. It fulfills so many of the
parameters that we as dentists should aspire to. It enhances the patients' lives. It is nondestructive in its nature. It is repairable, maintainable and durable. Very nice work here.
For many of you newer graduates, I suggest picking a case, offering the patient a mild discount and getting to work to do some of these cases.
Start with four teeth, then add more. Don't start with 10 on top and 10 on bottom, restoring
anterior guidance and leveling gingiva. But if you start with something manageable, and continue to add, these results can be achieved consistently. Bravo on the fine work here! ■
