3. Outbound marketing (fl yers, newspaper, billboards, radio, Facebook, etc.)
Pros: It works, it's fast and it's scalable.
Cons: It's expensive and the cost per patient is high, with high competition.
4. Inbound marketing (SEO, reviews, testimonials, educational content, etc.)
Pros: Almost as good as referrals for patient quality, scalable, builds momentum and gets
better each month.
Cons: Takes a long time to get off the ground, is an expensive, long-term investment.
If I were in your shoes, I would tackle #2 (networking) fi rst. Go out there and knock on
doors, get involved in the community, hand out free toothbrushes and fl oss at kids' events, do
a talk at the local school, etc. When patients do come in, wow them with a level of customer
service they've never seen before and will talk about to their friends. Ask yourself every day when
someone comes in, " How can I make this person have a wow experience? " and you will see #1
(referrals) steadily grow and become a core part of your business strategy.
As you get more stable, invest in #4 (inbound) with the long-term in mind. Get the most
Google reviews in your area, get a wall of testimonial videos, create content to help people better
understand oral health, etc. This is not going to show much impact for at least six to eight
months, and probably 12 months, before you really see it starting to grow. This is what will take
you from a $1,000,000 practice to a $5,000,000 practice.
The #3 option (outbound) makes a lot of sense if you're a corporation or DSO, need to
grow quickly, have deep pockets and have a really good sales team that can get patients in and
get them to accept treatment. It's unlikely that you have
the business, operational or sales skills, or even the right
staff, to make something like this work right now and get
new patients for a good cost per patient. This is a great
tool if your goal is to be a McDonald's of dentistry or a
mechanic for teeth. ■

I will start reaching out to local
businesses in the plaza, the golf
club near my offi ce and other establishments to tell them
we are open and ask if I can leave some fl yers or business
cards there with them.
I will start looking for a part-time associate position
and open on Saturday.
This location was picked not because of Walmart but
because the demographic in this ZIP code is good. If I
can choose, I'd rather not promote to Walmart shoppers,
but as you said, it's survival mode
I will start offering same-day emergencies.
As for the toys I bought, the most expensive is my
implant system. The 3D printers in total cost less than
$800. ■
