I think that minorities pursuing health care professions have to deal with not only personal challenges but also academic and stereotype barriers. I remember during my undergraduate studies, a friend who was also working toward applying to dental school implied that because I was a minority, it would be easier for me to get accepted into dental school. I felt completely disrespected by his behavior, but it also encouraged me to embrace and speak for members of my Native community who are aspiring to be a part of the health care field.
