she wants! I also believe having separate bank accounts is a biggie in this day and age. Looking
back, I would recommend the biggest honeymoon and wedding you can afford. ■

I would also highly recommend starting couples counseling early in the marriage. You don't
need to be having problems to do counseling. We tell our patients every day that prevention is
better than treatment. I highly recommend a counselor who uses the Gottman method. ■

Also, whenever she is complaining about a problem and asks for a solution, she doesn't really
want a solution. And whenever she isn't asking for a solution, she wants a solution. It's science!
Accept it! You will laugh about it together but it's totally true. ■

Congrats. It's very simple. Just learn this magic phrase. " Yes, dear! " Has worked for 39 years
so far. ■

Best advice: Learn to compromise. Find common interests or new things you want to try
together. Recognize that you will each need your alone time.
Find a love languages quiz. Answer the questions as a single person (both of you). It will help
you both in understanding what makes each of you " tick. " My No. 1 is time/experience with the
other person; last on my list is getting gifts. My hubby's No. 1 is physical affection. Knowing
this has been great for our relationship.
We tell our kids that when you think you have found " the one, " which you have, do a home
improvement project or take a trip together. If you can get through those two things without
wanting to stab each other's eyes out, you have fi gured out how to communicate pretty well.
We are in the midst of living in a rehab project at home and the answer I get to most
things I ask about is, " Whatever you want. " That's nice, but I am a horrible decision maker (fi ve
months to pick bedroom furniture) and now I'm under pressure to make decisions in hours/
days. We work through it though, even when we both get snippy about things. We are 16 years
in (11 married) and couldn't be happier. Congrats! ■
