Yes, implants placed only in the anterior mandible should be in the canine or lateral positions. In a tapered jaw, the canines are actually more posterior than ideal, and the laterals are preferred. In a square jaw, the canines are the best position. Pay attention when evaluating the axial views of your CT scan with regard to where the canines fall in the arch form and you will notice large variations based on jaw type.
