I went to an AGD lecture (Dr. Brucia? San Diego circa 2010) a few years ago that taught
that under-drying the primer solvent was the primary sensitivity issue for many. After primer was
scrubbed in, you can't over-dry it. But many clinicians are afraid to dry the etched tooth (a healthy
concern), and carry that fear into drying the primer solvent, hence the problem. ■

To get the perfect "dryness," dry with cotton pellet. I just avoid it by switching to OptiBond. ■

(Getting on my soap box.) All of these self-etch and universals were made because dentists
can't seem to get it through their heads that the dentin should be wet. The total-etch technique
has the most data and, in general, best data, but because we like to collapse the collagen matrix,
we need rewetting and self-etching agents to get a decent bond, never mind a better one. ■

Total etch ensures proper enamel etching that is best achieved with total-etch systems or
self-etch systems like Surpass that properly etch the enamel. Without proper etch, enamel will
leak. In my opinion sensitivity is a symptom that is a warning.

Research I have read indicates you must have pH less than 1.5 to properly condition enamel. In
my opinion, enamel seal is critical to long-term success. Find out the pH of the product you use. ■

Don't know how valid the below study is, but it indicates phosphoric acid etching is superior
to sandblasting for bond strength. I do not know. Whatcha think? Why not use a bonding
protocol that applies an acidic component less than 1.5 pH, as called for to properly etch enamel,
be it phosphoric acid or Surpass?
