Indirect Bonding Impression Technique?
What do people use or suggest for doing bubble-free alginate impressions for indirect
bonding? Pumice the teeth or have patient brush thoroughly? Rinse with mouthwash or
warm water? Anything else? Thanks. n

I do all indirect bonding at my office. My assistants’ impressions improved tenfold after
I purchased the TurboMax. They were mixing alginate in plastic bags before. I also have
them check each others’ impressions. n

I have one of those. Thanks. I’m looking for help in two areas: (1) Do you pumice preimpression? Or ask the patient to brush with a disposable toothbrush? (2) How do you cut
down on bubbles at the gingival margin? Someone once said to rinse with Cepacol? Thanks. n

We use a TurboMax with imprESSIX (the non-color change one), and we get tiny voids,
but most are very small and don’t affect my setup. We do a prophy paste pre-impression and
try to get up under the gingiva a little. This is mainly to de-plaque and helps with gingival
weeping when they come back in a week to get their braces. I’d love any info on how to eliminate the voids completely also, they bother me (OCD). n

I had the luxury of having Charlie show me how to do indirect while in residency. I had
his system down at Tufts, and of all my cases I did indirect, my first had the most debonds
(two). The others had one or none.
