Changing the Shape of Cosmetic Dentistry

Introduction
Long considered a part of complete care, closing a diastema is a frequent request from patients who
dislike this gap between their teeth. Orthodontic appliances or clear aligners do quite well in dealing with
this relatively common complaint.
Closing diastemas is a procedure that does appear in the practice of general or family dentistry from time
to time. Are orthodontists adequately addressing, informing and educating the same audience with regard
to this localized treatment issue? It's a question worth asking, and the following case is one worth reviewing.
In keeping with the theme of my column this month, I believe it's worth our while to discuss all cases with an
open mind, including the occasional case from a general dentist.
This well-documented clinical case presentation illustrates the concerns of patients, parents and general
dentists in addressing a specific problem. As is illustrated by this treatment, the patient was seen in a general
dental setting for achieving the desired result.
