FBLA-PBL Back to School TBL - 33

JY - What are some business

skills that FBLA has taught you
and how are you applying them
right now?
RY - FBLA taught me a lot about
professionalism, which I discovered is
something most high schools don't
really prepare students. From dressing
professionally to executing business
presentations, the activities in FBLA were
encouraged throughout and fostered a
very collaborative and learning culture.
There were many times in FBLA where I
stumbled in speeches or made mistakes,
but I'm glad that I learned when I was in
high school and not as a working adult.
I'm not saying that I don't still make
mistakes, but I am a more confident
speaker and have a professional edge
because FBLA.

JY - What type of leader were

you, during your FBLA years,
and what type of leader are you
now? What factors led to the
change in leadership styles?
RY - During my time in FBLA, I really
enjoyed making sure every member
I encountered felt supported. I would
do my best to try to get to know every
person I knew on my team like I tried
to get to know every person within my
chapter. I always enjoyed a quick coffee
chat to catch up with former members,
and I still practice these coffee chats
with friends and colleagues in the
present day.

JY - Do you have any advice or

tips for people who want to run
for an officer position but feel
hesitant in doing so?
RY - My advice is to reach out to
an officer and ask them how their

experience has been. Chances are
they'll be a huge advocate and also
share their experiences on how
nervous they once were. I would highly
suggest what fears there are? Failure
shouldn't be a fear, and I personally
think it should be discussed more.
Competition is good because the
intention is to challenge you to be a
better you, and there's nothing wrong
with not being chosen that one time,
or twice. During my job search, I
received several rejection emails and
sometimes didn't hear from a company
at all, but I received many offers that
actually wanted me to be part of their
team. Don't let the fear or failure hold
you back.

JY - Would you like to share any

final thoughts?
RY - I cannot emphasize it enough:
embrace failure and challenges. I felt
very fortunate during younger years
because I won all of my elections that I
ran for and fortunately did very well in
other aspects of my life, but that was
partly because I never truly stepped
outside of my comfort zone and took
big risks.
During college, there were many
times I had to overcome failure; I
didn't receive all of the internships I
wanted, I didn't always get elected for

an officer position, I didn't get as many
job offers as I'd hoped for, because
I had never embraced failure earlier
on, I focused on it because it was very
foreign and I let the noise become
louder than my successes. Instead, I
hope that others can recognize that
sometimes life throws curveballs,
and that is okay. Learn to grow from
mistakes, understand that some things
happen for a reason, and recognize
your successes.
Here are some highlights from
my life after FBLA that I'm very proud
of, but I learned through my 'failures':
accomplished six very different
internships, created and fostered
relationships with my professors,
colleagues, family and friends,
received competitive job offers out
of university, became one of the
youngest co-chairs for my company's
Asian Colleague Resource Group, and
I just know there is more to come.
