TBL December 2023 - 20

In each issue of Tomorrow's Business Leader,
FBLA asks a former member to share what
they are doing now, how FBLA helped prepare
them for success, and what advice they have for
today's members.
Doug Peterson
Operations Security Supervisor
ASM Research
Fairfax, VA
What are your job duties and responsibilities?
I lead risk-management efforts involving risk assessments and
completing security plans for federal information systems that
include security accreditation and policy development. I also
lead incident-response efforts that include monitoring and responding
to alerts from various security tools, such as endpoint
protection and security information and event management. In
addition, I oversee, direct, and mentor employees on various
projects to meet client needs, while ensuring employees' career
growth goals are a priority.
I got into the tech field because it is something I was somewhat
naturally good at. When looking into the field, it was obvious
there was a shortage of talent, so it felt like an easy decision
for job security.
When, where, and in what capacity were you
involved in FBLA?
I was a High School member at South Lakes High School in
Reston, Virginia, from 2007 to 2010 and was the president of
my chapter my senior year. I also worked at the National Center
as an intern and as a full-time employee from 2009-2014, where
I did a little bit of everything: data entry, customer service,
printing and mailing membership supplies, website updates,
and conference support.
What did you learn in FBLA that you still use today?
Leadership and team-building skills have been a foundation
of my career progression. Taking ownership of a task or small
project and then subsequently teaching others are the building
blocks to career growth.
FBLA seeks to inspire and prepare communityminded
business leaders. How did FBLA help prepare
you to think about how you could improve your
community? How are you doing so today?
Actively listening to advisers, workshop speakers, or keynote
presentations has always encouraged me and provided me
with knowledge from different perspectives that have helped
in all facets of life. I now make it a priority to mentor and
develop others both in the workplace and outside of it.
What advice would you give the 18-year-old version
of yourself?
Prioritize networking and developing new relationships. Hard
work and skill development are always important, but your
network will help guide you and provide opportunities you may
have never found without it.
What books, movies, TV shows, and/or podcasts do
you consider a " must " for FBLA students and why?
Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It...and Why the Rest
Don't (Rockefeller Habits 2.0 Revised Edition) by Verne Harnish
does a good job summarizing many popular books and opinions,
which leads you to many other books and sources of information.
The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and
Business by Charles Duhigg shows that creating or changing
habits is probably one of the most important things for anyone.
This book is great for anyone for career growth or just creating a
healthier lifestyle.
What makes you most excited for FBLA's future?
FBLA helps develop confidence, leadership, and technical skills
that we need more than ever! The building of community and
support provides a foundation for others to see what is possible
not only in themselves but in all areas around them. You have
people in this organization who truly believe in you!
