CHAPTER
SPOTLIGHT
L.B. Morris
Middle School
Tomorrow's Business Leader is spotlighting
outstanding chapters throughout the country.
The High School National Officers chose to
spotlight this chapter based on submissions.
L.B. Morris Middle School
Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
Members: 77
Chartered: 2023
In just its first year, the L.B. Morris Middle School FBLA chapter
has attracted more than half of the school's student body to join as
members and qualified 15 students for the 2024 National Leadership
Conference (NLC) in Orlando.
What explains the chapter's success? " Students joined the
chapter because there are minimal activities like this at the
middle school level, " Co-Adviser Tonia Thompson said. " They
were eager to join and become involved in social activities, attend
meetings and workshops, and provide service to the community. "
Thompson, who was an FBLA member at Lehighton (PA) High
School from 1994-1997, also started an FBLA chapter at Jim Thorpe
Area High School in 2016. Her High School members wanted to
expand their chapters and made presentations to students in 7th
and 8th grades at both L.B. Morris Middle School and Penn Kidder
Campus, a local K-8 school that is also in its first year as an FBLA
chapter and where Thompson serves as co-adviser.
" Once students started signing up and becoming involved in
activities, more and more students reached out to join, " Thompson
said. Activities have included touring local businesses, attending
two hockey games, and holding a roller-skating social.
Students at L.B. Morris Middle School, Penn Kidder Campus,
and Jim Thorpe Area High School joined together to collect more
than 2,100 pairs of shoes for Funds2Orgs, an FBLA national partner.
They raised more than $1,000 for Special Olympics Pennsylvania,
which is Pennsylvania FBLA's 2023-24 State Project.
Community service is a hallmark of the new chapter's efforts.
" Almost every single one of our members participated in the
collecting, sorting, and bagging of the shoes that were collected, "
Thompson said.
Now the schools are joining forces again with Clothes for Pros,
an effort to collect gently used business clothes for local FBLA
members to use for competitive events and for local community
members in need of clothing.

Students at L.B. Morris Middle School joined together with two other
local schools to collect and sort more than 2,100 pairs of shoes for a
fundraiser to benefit Special Olympics.
Students also wrote more than 300 holiday cards for local
residents in assisted-living communities, wrapped holiday
presents for homeless children, and collected canned food, pet
food, and personal hygiene products as part of their community
service efforts.
" Local organizations are reaching out to us weekly to have our
students provide community service at their different events, "
Thompson said.
In addition, the chapter's students have excelled in competitive
events, with the most popular ones including Sports & Entertainment
Management Concepts, Business Concepts, Learning Strategies,
and Social Media Concepts. Twenty-six students earned top
five spots at the Pennsylvania State Leadership Conference, with 15
students qualifying for the NLC.
Thompson advised other chapters looking to boost their membership
to promote FBLA in their school and community.
" Share FBLA with all of your students in school and then find
ways to become involved in your community with fundraising and
community service, " she added. " It is a very rewarding experience
to be involved in helping members of our community. "
