One of my first coaching mentors was Reno Saccoccia,
the head football coach at Steubenville High School and my
brother-in-law. He is among the winningest coaches in Ohio
high school football history, but more than that, he's a great
role model and mentor to thousands of young people over a
long and distinguished career. My respect and admiration
for high school teachers and coaches like Saccoccia run
deep, as I firmly believe that they represent the very best of
what teaching, coaching and mentoring are meant to be.
Having been in those shoes, I can speak to it - I lived it.
It's one of the driving factors for me in writing the Powerline
column. It enables me to give back and thank you for a job
well done.
Here are some takeaways for high school coaches:
* Develop a true love for what you do, and a caring
attitude for the young people you impact. Those kids
are going to remember you for something, so make it a
positive, meaningful and nurturing experience.
* Remember that the kids want discipline and
structure, even though they won't always admit it. It's
possible to administer these pillars of success with
compassion and understanding. They will be forever
grateful.
* Keep learning, and understand that change can be
good. Always put the health and well-being of studentathletes
at the forefront. There are a ton of resources out
there for continuing education, and you should take
advantage of them.
* Whenever you feel overworked, step back. Use your
vacation, spend quality time with your family, and
recharge your batteries. It's possible to work hard and
smart at the same time. I took far too long to learn this, so
don't make the same mistake. You may prolong your
career, and make it more enjoyable.
Shifting gears
As a young high school coach who was hungry for
knowledge, I attended every clinic possible - mostly on
my own dime. It was at the Penn State Football Clinic that
I met Dan Riley, who was then the Nittany Lions strength
coach. Riley was a major influence in my transition to
the strength and conditioning profession. Having been a
strength training aficionado since childhood, Riley inspired
me with his coaching style and relationship-building talents.
He was a tireless worker, and had a knowledge base and
coaching demeanor unlike anything I had ever seen. It's no
