The state of pay-to-play
When budgets are cut, some programs rely on participation
fees to make up the difference. But there's only so much they can
ask of students without forcing them out of the sport.
Last year's survey showed that 39 percent of schools
implemented participation fees, and that number jumped during
the 2018-19 school year. The percentage of schools charging
more than $200 also increased (up from 14.4 percent in 201718),
though many schools cap the amount a student-athlete pays
to avoid discouraging them from playing multiple sports.

Fundraising is still paramount
Whether it's hosting a golf outing or partnering with local
businesses, athletic directors continue to count on fundraising
as a critical part of their budgets.
This year, nearly 16 percent of athletic administrators said
fundraising makes up more than half of their budgets. For
most schools, it continues to serve as a way to buy new
uniforms, gear or fund team events. Coaches and booster
clubs were most responsible for developing and implementing
fundraising campaigns.
Despite the importance of fundraising, the expectation of
finding new revenue streams continues to rank outside of the
top 10 on our list of biggest concerns for athletic administrators.
This year, it jumped four spots to No. 12.
