EDITORIAL between the lines
when programs are
eliminated,
OPPORTUNITY
KNOCKS
By Kevin Hoffman, Editorial Director
More high school students than ever
before are playing sports, but that doesn't
safeguard any program from elimination.
In our November/December issue, we
featured the football program at Lakewood
(N.J.) High School and its fight to survive
amid a district-wide budgetary crisis. The
team was saved, but since publishing
that story I've read about schools in Massachusetts, Indiana,
Minnesota and Pennsylvania that either cut football programs
or forfeit the season due to low numbers. Football remains the
nation's most popular sport, but concerns over serious injuries
created a slow drip of players exiting the game.
While most of us prefer that safety improves and football
thrives, the reality is we don't know what the future holds. If
students don't want to play football, it's the school's responsibility
to find an alternative. And there's no shortage of solutions.
Start with the existing sports in your school. Athletes who
don't already participate in two or three sports might look
for ways to stay involved. They just need a nudge in the right
direction, and that could mean an introduction to the coaches or
athletes in other programs.
Another option is to consider adding a team, if doing so doesn't
violate Title IX. Looking at our State of the Industry report,
athletic directors named lacrosse, golf, bowling and archery as
some of the most popular newcomers to their schools. Some
northern schools added trap shooting, and esports is gaining
momentum toward becoming a state-sanctioned " sport. " If all
else fails, survey the athletes and coaches to identify alternatives
that best serve the mission of your program. A great idea can
come from anywhere.
Nobody claims it will be easy. When it comes to football, the
sport generates revenue and community interest like no other
program. Finding a substitute might seem nearly impossible.
But, whether you're a coach or athletic administrator, find ways
to turn the negative into a positive. You can sulk in your chair
and dwell on your misfortune, or you can take action.
Author and businessman Jack Welch once wrote, " You can
look at the situation and feel victimized. Or, you can look at it and
be excited about conquering the challenges and opportunities it
presents. " Think of problems as blessings instead of obstacles,
advice that's relevant when facing any of life's challenges.
The best leaders are adept at finding solutions to problems.
Keep that in mind the next time you encounter any serious issue
within your athletic program.
