Charging participation fees
High school athletic programs continue to operate with
shoestring budgets, and at least some are drawing additional
revenue by implementing pay-to-play fees.
More than half of athletic directors (56.2%) said they
impose fees on students who participate in sports. That's
similar to last year's number and still far lower than the 201213
school year, when the number of schools implementing
additional fees peaked at 66.4%.
The amount of the fee varies from school to school, but
most athletic directors keep their participation fees at $100
or less. It's a delicate balance, but administrators want
to draw additional funds through pay-to-play fees without
discouraging students from playing sports.

Fundraising is still paramount
If it's not pay-to-play fees, athletic programs are looking
outside of the school to find additional revenue opportunities.
That often comes in the form of sponsorships or
advertisements, but grassroots fundraising remains effective.
Athletic directors in our survey said they continue to rely
on team fundraising, especially for " extras " like apparel that
are not critical to the function of the program. When it comes
to the overall department budget, just 11.4% of athletic
administrators said fundraising makes up at least half of their
funding. That's the lowest mark in the nine years of our survey.
Even though athletic budgets in schools nationwide are
stabilizing, athletic directors said they continue to do what
they can to make every dollar count.
" In the last five years, our program has doubled in
participation and the only way I could cut costs is to reduce
the amount of coaches in some sports, " one administrator
said. " We also reduced the amount of tournaments teams
were allowed to participate in. "
" We haven't seen a reduction in budget, but we have seen
increases in costs, " said another athletic director. " I just
don't get the opportunity to help programs as much with the
budget. Programs fundraise more, and I conduct tournaments
to bring in money. "
Coaches continue to shoulder most of the fundraising
responsibilities, followed by booster club and athletic directors.
