Examining the challenges and opportunities for coaches nationwide
Parent-coach relationships, athlete safety, and referee
shortages are just some of the topics on the mind of
coaches across the country that have been highlighted in
our third annual Coaches Report.
Two years ago, Coach & Athletic Director began
surveying high school coaches to collect feedback on the
issues most pressing in the industry. The results give us
a greater understanding of the obstacles coaches must
hurdle while providing relative content to better confront

one-third of coaches listed the child's role on the team as the
next highest topic that was brought up. While 20% of coaches
surveyed said parent confrontations were sparked by the
player complaining to the parents first, 13% of coaches said
conversations centered around perceived favoritism.
It's of the utmost importance to keep the lines of
communication open on both sides of the relationship,
and most coaches have found that communication has
been key in setting boundaries for when, where, and how
conversations are had.
" I have a parent-coach meeting every year before the season
starts explaining how I would like them to communicate with
me if they have a problem with something in our program.
I use the 24-hour rule - no meetings right after a game or
