assist inexperienced teachers. But if yours doesn't,
take it upon yourself to arrange for this help. Reducing
concerns over classroom work may give them reason
to consider coaching.

.Assist with child care. Establish an afternoon child
.care program for coaches. This will require approval
from your superintendent or school board, and it will
cost some money to hire a supervisor and some student
assistants. However, providing this coverage could convince
some teachers that coaching can fit into their schedules.
.Minimize concerns over parents. Explain to
.teachers what steps you take to minimize conflicts
with misguided, problematic parents. These proactive
efforts also could be covered during your in-service
presentation. Emphasize that you're willing to sit in on
any meeting with a confrontational parent. You are there
to help and protect coaches.
.Reinforce the student connection. Point out that
.coaching provides teachers with another unique
way to connect with students beyond the classroom.
While teaching does occur on the fields and courts, the
interaction goes well beyond sport-specific skills. Coaches
often serve as confidants, counselors and cheerleaders.
The relationships forged in athletics often enhance the
relationship in the classroom.
.Approach teachers 1-on-1. After making your
.presentations during in-service meetings, strike up
individual conversations with teachers. During these
talks, specifically ask what accommodations you could
make to get them thinking about coaching? You may not
be able to increase the coaching stipends, since these are
negotiated with the school board. But there may be small
concessions that move the needle, and you'll never know
unless you ask.
While teachers without coaching experience may not
fit as well as a head varsity coach, they could be used as
assistants. In this case, the head coach could bring
these individuals up to speed with sport-specific
knowledge. With a few years of experience, it may be
possible that these teachers are prepared to take on a
head coaching job.
With the increasing difficulty of finding coaching
candidates, the teachers in your school present a possible
alternative. Trying to convince and attract some of these
individuals will take a little thought and creativity on your
part. Even if you recruit one or two coaches, it's worth the
effort if you're having a tough time finding individuals to fill
positions. There's no harm in trying.
