A piercing problem
The Pacific Northwest looks to California to avoid GWSS

wenty years ago, California's glassy-winged
sharpshooter (GWSS) infestation was limited to the
southern one-fourth of the state.

Since then, the pest has moved north throughout the
Central Valley, putting dozens of counties at risk and
repeatedly triggering quarantines and forcing grape and
other fruit growers to be vigilant.
Government programs and grower and homeowner
cooperation have been successful in ensuring the pest
doesn't spread throughout California or become a problem
for Pacific Northwest states. Part of the effort to control
GWSS and the disease it spreads, Pierce's disease, has
been led by David Haviland, a University of California
Cooperative Extension entomologist based in Bakersfield.
" We continue to push it back and to look for satellite
populations and continue to eradicate those, " Haviland said
during a July 6 webinar presented by Washington State
University and the Washington Wine Industry Foundation
about the GWSS as part of the " Stop the Spread " series.
The Stop the Spread initiative is funded by a USDA grant
to the Washington Wine Industry Foundation and part of a
push to bring grape quarantine rules in Pacific Northwest
states in line with quarantines for California, to streamline
the rules and trade. A similar webinar on Aug. 10 focused
on the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, a strain of which
causes Pierce's disease, which is spread by GWSS as it
feeds on grapevines.
As with other pests and diseases in the Stop the
Spread series, Washington does not have infestations of
GWSS. However, if the pest travels north, Haviland said
it could conceivably find a foothold in parts of the state.
Although many parts of the Pacific Northwest are too
cold for the GWSS to survive a winter, Haviland showed
a climate map of areas the pest can survive, which
includes a north-south swath between the middle and
eastern part of Washington.
One of the reasons GWSS is hard to eradicate where
commercial crops are found is that crops don't display
symptoms in the year they've been infected. The bacteria
restrict the flow of water in a plant's xylem, and by the
