All good things must come to an end ...
A
lot has changed in the cherry industry over the last
decade. More than three years ago, Phil Korson
retired as president at CMI and left some big shoes
to fill. He had worked in the cherry industry for more than
40 years.
Days after his retirement, the cherry industry lost
the dried cherry dumping case. A couple months later,
COVID-19 arrived and became a world pandemic. The
executive director position for the Cherry Industry
Administrative Board (CIAB) turned over a few times.
In 2020 and 2021, growers faced back-to-back short
crops in Michigan. Pressure from imports has continued
to increase. Input costs, including labor, have skyrocketed,
and we lost several key cherry researchers at MSU.
Grower prices remain stagnant.
The list goes on and on...
Through all these challenges the last few years, two
leaders in our industry have volunteered countless hours
to help navigate through each and every one. CMI chairman
Mike VanAgtmael and vice chairman Jeff Send will be
retiring from serving on the CMI board of directors
this September.
I don't know if our industry stakeholders and partners
fully understand the significant role that these two men,
along with our secretary Terry Sorenson from Wisconsin
and treasurer Marc Rowley from Utah, have played to keep
the industry moving forward. These gentlemen have spent
countless hours in executive committee meetings (often
without much notice) to keep all our traditional programs
in place while expanding beyond our strategic plan to
ensure every priority for the industry was addressed, with
limited assessment funding.
There are 195 sweet cherry growers in Michigan, 363
U.S. tart cherry growers, 35 processors and more than
100 marketers. Without raising the Michigan Cherry
Committee assessment since 1982, CMI has been the
advocate for the industry on an array of different issues
and priorities.
In addition to tackling the many, many challenges we've
faced, we have accomplished some great successes along
