Let's use an example of a
farmworker making $15 per hour
and working, with the overtime
exemption for agriculture in place,
60 hours a week during the season.
$15 multiplied by 60 hours equals
$900 per week.
Now let's use the same example

multiplied by 40 hours equals $600 per week.
The way I recall arithmetic, $900 is more than $600, isn't
it? How is the farmworker better off making less money?
In several jurisdictions around the country, over
the objections of farmers and farmworkers alike,
" progressive " state legislatures, at the behest of labor
" advocates, " have foisted overtime requirements onto
their state's farmers and ranchers. The results were just
as the farmers, ranchers, and farmworkers alike told the
legislatures they would be. When the overtime limit is
reached, the workers are sent home. And they are sent
home with far less money in their pockets.
A strawberry, an apple, a blueberry or a bell pepper
picked at $15 an hour has a significantly different cost
profile to the grower than
one picked at time-and-ahalf
or $22.50 per hour. It
would be economic waste
for the employer to respond
otherwise.
New research applied to
the Department of Labor's
own data reflects that, son of a gun, economics is real!
This research shows definitively that when the overtime
threshold is reached, workers are sent home and
perhaps new crews take their place. But, overtime pay is
avoided. In some parts of the country where legislatures
have taken this approach, farmworker families have been
forced to move into lower-cost housing because this
" progressive " approach has made their former homes
unaffordable and slashed their earnings. And sometimes,
where previously incomes were high enough to afford
health insurance and food for the home, Medicaid and
SNAP benefits are turned to make up the shortfall. How
is this " progress? "
Perhaps the city folks in Congress ought to realize
that food doesn't come from the grocery store. But, then
again, perhaps they are far too smart for that.
