Specialty crops get
$10M in USDA funds
More than $10 million is available
for competitive grant funding
in the 2019 Specialty Crop MultiState
Program (SCMP), the USDA
announced in June.
U.S. Apple Association's eighth -
and final -survey report on the 2018
apple crop. shows this year's fresh
apple holdings on June 1, 2019,
totaled 27.6 million bushels, 7%
less than the inventories reported
for June 1 of last year.
Processing holdings totaled 10.8
million bushels, 20% less than last
year on June 1. The total number
of apples in storage on June 1,
2019, was 38.5 million bushels, 11%
less than last June's total of 43.3
million bushels but 3% more than
the 5-year average for that date.

regulatory and industry affairs for
USApple, said the next edition of
Grants are awarded to state
departments of agriculture to
fund collaborative, multi-state
projects that address food safety,
plant pests and disease, research,
crop-specific common issues, and
marketing and promotion for
specialty crops including fruits and
vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits,
and horticulture and nursery crops
(including floriculture).
State departments must partner
with organizations located in at
least two different states to qualify.
Partner organizations include
specialty crop producer associations
and groups, state agencies,
Tribal governments, universities,
nonprofits and other stakeholder
groups and organizations.
Funding will
be available for
use beginning
Sept. 30, 2019.
Matching
funds are not
required. Projects are awarded for
up to 36 months and are expected
to be completed by Sept. 29, 2022.

before 11:59 p.m. eastern time,
Oct. 1, 2019. For more information,

Minnesota agritourism
tour planned for July
A July tour of Minnesota
agritourism is being offered by the
North American Farmers' Direct
Produce Ranch, Afton Apple
Orchard, Waldoch Farm, Ferndale
Market, Pinehaven Farm, Tweite's
Family Farm, The Dead End
Hayride, Fireside Orchard and
Gardens, Pine Tree Apple Orchard,
Bridgewater Produce Farm, 7 Vines
Vineyard, Minnesota's Largest
Candy Store, and Emma Krumbee's
Orchard and Farm.
NAFDMA hasn't conducted a
summer agritourism conference
for six years, said Membership
Development and Services Manager
Lisa Dean. The summer timing
allows attendees to visit the farms
while their agritourism events are
in full swing.
Dean said the event will focus
on a variety of topics, including
production, pick-your-own,
agritainment and retail operations.
Ticket prices for adults who are
not members of NAFDMA are $570.
There are also reduced prices for
NAFDMA members and for children
aged 2-16.

Thirteen farms will be visited
during the two days of the tour,
July 23-24, with buses departing
from Bloomington, Minnesota.
Stops on the tour include Bob's
Lodging is separate; however,
NAFDMA has negotiated for
a special price at Hyatt Place
