The most critical time in apple production is bloom and early post bloom.
Within just a few two weeks, growers must apply both plant growth
regulators (PGRs) and calcium to set the stage for a successful season.
Fruit size, fi rmness, and quality depend on maximizing calcium uptake during
cell division - the only time calcium can enter the fruit cell wall.
This is also when PGRs, such as Apogee®
and Kudos®
, must be applied to
control terminal growth to manage fi re blight and trauma blight. Pruning must
be done manually if this application is missed, and labor is expensive.

Because key application timings for Apogee or Kudos and calcium overlap, growers
are often forced to drop calcium nutrient sprays out of their tank mixes. Regular
foliar calcium products negate the effi cacy of Apogee and Kudos, so they cannot
be applied together. Sysstem®
-SeaCAL and Sysstem®
-CAL are the only foliar
calcium products that can be tank mixed with Apogee. Trials at the University of
Massachusetts and replicated by Washington State University, Pennsylvania State
University, and private research demonstrate Sysstem-CAL can safely be sprayed with
Apogee or Kudos without reducing the effi cacy of either PGR.
Terminal growth was reduced by the same amount whether Apogee or Kudos
were applied with or without Sysstem-CAL. However, fruit on trees that also
received Sysstem-Cal at 64 oz./100 gal. had signifi cantly less incidence of bitter
pit. Sysstem-CAL is a low-pH systemic calcium phosphite solution that rapidly
penetrates fruit and leaf tissue, making it the best choice to deliver calcium faster
and more completely than other foliar calcium formulations. When tank mixed, the
low-pH formulation also aids in the uptake of larger molecule chemistries that can
be very diffi cult to get into the tree and fruit.
This unique technology is a win-win. It provides apple growers with the tools
necessary to accomplish two key orchard management goals - control terminal
growth and maximize fruit cell calcium levels. Tank mixed together with Apogee
or Kudos, Sysstem-CAL allows growers the ability maintain their PGR/growth
management program without sacrifi cing critical foliar calcium sprays that will
ensure superior quality fruit in the fall.
