ADVERTISEMENT Story® has been around since 2017, but all new varieties face barriers to acceptance, no matter how good they are. Bob Bush in New Era is putting a personal spin on it and it is selling well. Story® (Inored cv. USPP# 22794) is scab-resistant. Mid-October ripening in Michigan. Firm and dense fruit. Sweet and tasty. Excellent storage potential in common storage. Scionon® Grafting Shears are easy to use and economical for smaller quantities of grafting in the field or shed. MOSER FRUIT TREE SALES WOW! Is the fruit industry going into a recession like the mid-1990s? The fear of Chinese apple concentrate driving low prices seemed to be the cause then. I remember visiting apple growers at that time who said they would never plant another tree! But we eventually recovered. So much so that perhaps we are in another period of over-production for the market we have. Tart cherry is in a similar situation. How long until there a bright spot on the horizon? The fruit tree nursery industry suffers along with the fresh industry, but lags by a couple of seasons. Growers can choose to stop planting immediately unless they are committed a year or more ahead by contracts or wellplanned out re-planting goals. There are lots of fruit trees available for 2025 and 2026. If you have a well thought out planting scheme then now is the time to look for good trees that you might be able to score deals on. Better marketing, improved varieties and controlled production are likely the way to ease the pain the fruit industry is suffering. Choose wisely and think outside the box in marketing. New varieties and cultivars are always being introduced. I would recommend the improved cultivar Mitchell strain of Evercrisp® (MAIA 1) to plant now to get on the bandwagon that this variety is creating. Sometimes new varieties like Story® need a helping hand to get marketed. Story® that I think is perfect for Michigan, but it's hard to sell something new is a great scab-resistant variety without a twist. One of my customers, Bob Bush, puts his personal spin to Story® and it is paying off. Remember the original Honeycrisp? The farm marketers made it popular and large-scale commercial production eventually followed. Another way to help alleviate tree prices is do-it-yourself. Grafting your own can result in lower per acre costs and help with fulfilling the need for hard-to-find or discontinued varieties or heirlooms.
