POTATO TALKS ON THE EXPO STAGE
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 5 | 2:00pm-4:45pm | ACC North, 100 Level
2:00pm-2:20pm
Profits and Climate Change Come
Head-to-Head in Your Potato
Storage Barn
High temperatures during harvest can make
successful long-term storage of potatoes more
challenging. When potatoes cannot be cooled
in a timely manner, the consequences can
include moisture loss, storage rots, pressure
bruise, reduced quality, increased physiological
age and earlier sprouting. The bottom line
is higher costs due to reduced pack-out and
food waste. To preserve tuber quality under
adverse conditions, growers need to be aware
of the available tools including storage rot
prevention, dormancy enhancers, refrigeration
equipment and management tools. Under
many circumstances, extra inputs made during
storage can increase profits and make a strong
contribution to your sustainability story. The
presentation will focus on solutions to the
problems brought on by climate change with an
emphasis on preventative solutions.

Genetic Responses of Potato Tubers
to Chemical Sprout Regulators
Application of chemical sprout regulators
to control sprouting in stored potato tubers
result in a range of responses from cell death
to mild growth suppression. Using molecular
tools, it is possible to examine the genetic
mechanisms associated with sprout control that

are both long lasting and ephemeral. As the
potato industry utilizes new chemistries and
procedures to inhibit sprouting, the concept
of a more subtle and sustainable control for
potato storage becomes a reality.

Harnessing the Power of Biologicals
and Chemistry
Potato growers looking for the best way to
control diseases and increasing plant health
will be interested in this session. Biologicals
have been a hot topic in the industry, but many
growers question the value and consistency
of performance. Attendees will hear about
new solutions that combine both biologicals
and chemistry, to maximize the performance
of both types of active ingredients - focusing
on commercially available products and those
coming down the product development pipeline.
These new practices result in higher yield, crops
that can better withstand stress - all while
saving time and costs. Return on investment
will be a key focus of this session.

Vive Crop Protection
* Joe Hill, President, Joe Hill Consulting
