The Role of Bacillus
What is Bacillus?
Bacillus is a genus of rod shaped, gram-positive bacteria.
This genus of bacteria with more than 260 species are
found in various environments, from soil to water, and
some species have significant medical and industrial
importance. They are known for their ability to withstand
harsh conditions by reducing themselves to oval
endospores, which helps them remain in a dormant state
for years and survive where other bacteria might perish.
Protective Characteristics
Among the various species, Bacillus pumilus stands
out for its notable protective characteristics and
excellent compatibility with plants. This bacterium has
demonstrated a remarkable ability to enhance plant
defense mechanisms against certain pathogens, such as
Fusarium, Pythium, and Rhizoctonia, which cause plant
root diseases.
Félix explains, " When a plant hosts this beneficial
bacterium, which thrives alongside specific structures, it
can grow and feed off root exudates, creating a biofilm-a
community of bacteria acting as a protective shield for
the root. " Martin adds, " In this biofilm, Bacillus pumilus
produces its own organic fungicide that will defend the
plant against pathogens. "
How It Works
The relationship between Bacillus pumilus and plants
begins symbiotically, with the bacteria multiplying near the
roots, thanks to the sugars provided by the plants. As the
bacterium's population thrives, it forms a protective biofilm
around the roots, composed of lipopeptides and biofungicidal
molecules that safeguard against a variety of pathogens. This
biofilm acts as a barrier against root diseases and stimulates
the plant's natural defenses, enabling more effective
resistance against harmful pathogens.
