SUSTAINABILITY
rates after orchard recycling has been the trickiest part
of the process so far. From my perspective, the worst
thing you could do is burn the young trees with too much
nitrogen and lose them. "
Orchard needs vary, but supplemental N is essential.
Until recently, UC Davis recommended doubling N
applications in the first year after replant to prevent
stunting the trees, and applying it early and gradually. This
is changing to emphasize nitrogen's early application.
" If we provide nitrogen early, even some right at planting,
a small dose right at the get-go, we could potentially not
see any tie up of nitrogen in the first leaf. And, not really
see any tie up during the growing process at all, " said Luke
Milliron, orchards system advisor, University of California
Cooperative Extension.
In Milliron's trial in walnuts in the Sacramento Valley,
the chipped trees and the control trees were the same size,
showing that the chipped did a great job, and the growers
listened to new advice from Extension advisors Brent Holtz
and Mae Culumber, taking on the fertilizer program early.
Whole orchard recycling resources
Because the ramifications of a stunted orchard can be
detrimental for years to come, it's understandable that
trying out a new technique can be anxiety inducing. If the
benefits of WOR seem like something a grower is willing to
try for his or her orchard, help and informational resources
are available. Here are a few resources that can help set up
an orchard for success.
UCCE's whole orchard recycling study
The perfect guide for growers just getting started with
WOR. This study provides tools and resources like a
cost-benefit guide, grower testimonials, case studies,
frequently asked questions and more. (https://

Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP)
Funded by the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation
Service, EQIP provides financial and technical assistance
to those addressing natural resource concerns and those
delivering environmental benefits like increased soil health
and reduced soil erosion and water and air quality. (https://

The San Joaquin Valley Alternatives to Agricultural
Open Burning Incentive Program
This program provides monetary incentives to chip
or shred agricultural material rather than open burning.
Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served
basis while funds are available. (http://valleyair.org/grants/
