Unreliable water supplies could pull 1 million
California acres from production
California's multi-year drought is greatly affecting
farmers, particularly as the state moves closer to Sustainable
Groundwater Management Act requirements. Irrigated lands
in the Central Valley will have to come out of production
even if temporarily, to curb the strain on surface and
groundwater supplies.
An estimated 1 million acres could be removed from
production if water supplies continue to be unreliable,
which could have a dramatic rippling effect, impacting many
industries and larger economies.
There are voluntary funding programs available to
assist growers who may be considering taking acres out
of production, thus " repurposing " their fallowed acres
into conservation habitat, groundwater recharge, or other
restoration or conservation projects.
In addition to other programs, including conservation
easement programs that may preserve land productivity,
available options include the Pandemic Cover Crop
Program, Conservation Reserve Program, American
Farmland Trust Regional Conservation Partnership
Program, Wetlands Reserve Easements, California
Department of Conservation Working Lands and
Riparian Corridors Program, and the Multibenefit Land
Repurposing Program.
Texas pecan production below average,
demand remains strong
Texas pecan orchards were expected to produce a mixed
bag of results amid good prices and strong demand.
Larry Stein, AgriLife Extension horticulturist, said the
drought and heat likely impacted some orchards, and 2022
was also expected to be a below-average year because last
year's crop was heavy. Pecan orchards in the West were
showing good crop loads, while trees in Central Texas were
expected to provide below-average yields.
" The crop looks good, but it is hit and miss this year, " Stein
said. " If you want pecans, I would suggest finding them early
to make sure you get some. "
Most commercial producers have irrigation, which is an
important factor for producing retail-quality pecans. The
moisture will help trees finish the crop, but it will also
keep the tree healthy and help it store food for next year's
pecan crop.
" Drought was stressful on the trees, but the producers who
