EDITOR'S LETTER
Technology innovations
W
elcome to the September/
October issue! As harvest
season is wrapping up,
there is always time for growers to
think about technology and how it
can assist in so many tasks and also
how important water management is.
In this issue, National Nut Grower
turned to Mike Wade, executive
director of the California Farm
Water Coalition, to discuss efforts
focused on controlling salinity and
elements, such as boron, which can
be toxic and problematic at higher
levels to almond crops. Other water quality management and
emerging tech that can assist growers was also discussed during
the interview. Turn to page 6 to read about this important topic.
Now more than ever, technology is playing an important role in

all parts of crop production and postharvest and processing tasks.
Turn to page 14 to learn how AI is paving the path for production
line advances, including the ability to take individual rejects and
separate them into trash, nuts to be sold for milk or candy and
products to be sold for animal food.
Technology, as we all know, plays such an important role in
all parts of crop production - from planting to harvesting and
processing. In this issue, we have a FIRA-USA preview for you on
page 8 and information about production line advances on page 14.
Carriere Family Farms is spotlighted in our grower feature
and National Nut Grower talked about its amazing history, how
tech has played a role in its production and also discussed its
sustainability efforts. Turn now to page 10 to read more about this
successful farming operation.
Also in this issue, we are happy to share two guest columns. The
Almond Board of California discusses organic, climate-smart and
regenerative practices and what the differences are, page 23.
The other guest column is from Anne Warden, the CEO for the
American Pecan Promotion Board and American Pecan Council.
She addresses the plans on breaking pecans out of the traditional
holiday role and more into the mainstream in order to help increase
sales volumes and prices for pecan growers. Turn to page 26 to learn
more about Warden's initiatives.
We hope you enjoy the issue!
