THE PROCESS
KRISTEN KAZARIAN
New Connections
Salutations! I am the new managing editor of
Kristen Kazarian
Managing Editor
Produce Processing and am eager to meet all of
you during this journey. I've been around the
proverbial block, where I have worked at Packaging
Strategies and Food Engineering magazines most
recently, covering food and beverage packaging
and processing. It's likely I have met some of you
at events or other happenings.
I'm excited to focus on produce, where many of
the farms near me grow sweet corn, varieties of
greens, strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, potatoes,
sugar beets and more. As a relative newbie living in farmland (I have
horses, so I somewhat qualify), I notice what weather can do to crops.
In mid-Michigan - like much of the U.S. this summer - it has been
extremely dry and hot. The rain has been non-existent save for a few
showers here and there.
So, what does this have to do with processors? A lot. Most large
farms have the ability to water crops at a time with machinery; yet
smaller farms may not. Less produce means less processing needs. How
can processors help? Keep in touch with your produce suppliers to see
how they are doing. Are they expecting the same yields as last year,
or the last few years? The largest piece of the pie is the relationship
you have with these suppliers - be it product, equipment, materials,
etc. Keep in touch and find out what you can do in order to keep your
business in the green.
The USDA's May 12, 2022 report for produce shows that orange
production in the U.S. for the 2021-2022 season is 3.88 million tons,
up 2% from the previous forecast but down 12% from the 2020-2021
final utilization.
The dreaded word " waste " comes to mind as well. If crops aren't
growing, it is likely fruits and vegetables will be smaller, and there
may be some waste from no growth at all. As seen in last issue's PMMI
column (May/June, Page 24), minimizing produce waste depends on
timely harvesting, optimum handling, sorting and grading and quick
delivery for processing a sale.
However, as in years past, the crops will likely grow, the produce
will come, and consumers will be none the wiser. So, check in with
your suppliers, ask what you can do and keep the faith. We're all in
this together.
