folks - whether already in the beverage
industry or not - continue to come up with
new ideas to satisfy the ever-changing wants
of consumers.
Take non-dairy milk, for example. The
alternative milk category is worth $10 billion
globally and saw a 16% increase over the past
couple of years. There's soy milk, almond
milk, rice milk, oat milk, coconut milk and hemp milk among
the choices.
And now ... potato milk!
On Page 16, you'll find a story highlighting new potato-based
beverage products. It includes a look at DUG Drinks, a line of
milk alternatives that utilize potato flakes as one of the main
ingredients. The line, which has three varieties - original,
unsweetened and barista - was launched earlier this year and
has received accolades at the World Food Innovation Awards
for Best Allergy Friendly Product.
In addition to potatoes, which are nutrient-dense vegetables
with significant levels of vitamin C and potassium, DUG Drinks
are fortified with calcium, folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin D,
giving them nutrients found in traditional dairy milk. In addition,
potatoes need considerably less water to grow than almonds,
which heightens the product's sustainability profile.
The makers of DUG Drinks - Sweden-based Veg of Lund -
are working to get the product to North American consumers.

As we wrap up 2021, let's hope 2022 takes us further away
from the pandemic back to normal - whatever normal may
be in the future.
