" It's just a different approach of control, "
he said, adding that he believes the
European system has a place in the U.S.
" Our advantages are that we use less
energy, it's more energy efficient, and
we better control rot and diseases in
storage, " he said.
In the Netherlands, 90-95 percent of
table potatoes are stored in boxes. Much
of the equipment Tolsma-Grisnich
manufactures and sells is designed
for box storage, although they design
equipment for bulk storage as well.
Van Maldegem said they have a little
something for everyone.
" With our equipment we measure
more at different spots in the storage,
we store in boxes instead of large
bulk stores, which I saw there, " he
said. " Those new varieties are more
susceptible sometimes to bruising and
damage. With our new approach and
equipment, we are there at the right
time to handle those gently. "
A LOOK AT TOLSMAGRISNICH'S
PORTFOLIO
Tolsma first opened its doors in
the 1960s in Emmeloord, a small
city located in the Flevoland region
of The Netherlands. The region was
once completely under the sea. " A lot

of farmers came here to start a new
farming company, so there was a lot of
market for storage and for grading, " Van
Maldegem said.
Tolsma has since expanded to reach
markets throughout Europe. Working
in partnership with Kiremko, a Dutch
potato processing equipment company,
they later entered the Chinese market.
In 2007, Tolsma took over the
Grisnich company. " As we were
getting more and more international,
also in cooperation with Kiremko, it
was also interesting to have our own
grading line, " Van Maldegem said.
Tolsma focuses on ventilation and
cooling equipment, and refrigeration;
Grisnich is responsible for washing,
cleaning and grading equipment. The
company's focus is potatoes, onions
and carrots.
In 2010, Tolsma-Grisnich opened
offices in China, Russia and India
alongside Kiremko, further developing
their market. In 2013, they started
working closely with Cavendish in
Canada, and two years later moved a
sales office with engineers to where
they focus on the American market.
Tolsma-Grisnich offers
everything
from grading machines to box
handling systems and cleaning and
washing equipment to conveyor belts.
Products include their Track & Trace
system, their mobile ventilation and
cooling systems, and Vision Control,
an intelligent storage computer that
controls temperature, relative humidity
and CO2 levels.
TOLSMA TRACK & TRACE
Using an electronic tagging system,
Tolsma Track & Trace allows growers
of box-stored table potatoes to manage
stock more clearly and efficiently. An
affixed electronic tag gathers data of the
product in each box as it moves from the
field to storage. Doing so gives growers
an accurate overview of product and its
precise location.
While Tolsma Track & Trace was
developed with seed potato growers
in mind, there has been more interest
from larger companies, Van Maldegem
said. The system, however, is suitable
for both.
