on disease threat

techniques to propagate potato plants.
There's no tolerance for the slightest
trace of disease at the earliest stage in
the seed potato production process,
as quality problems are amplified with
each subsequent field generation.

use chemicals that are designed for
hospitals - bactericides, virucides and
fungicides, " Atchley said. " And we have
never, in 28 years, had any significant
disease issues. "
Raised in Boise with no farming
background, Atchley earned her college
degrees in English. Yet, she now fills
a highly specialized niche in seed
production - a function conducted by
just a handful of operations due to the
intensive sanitation requirements. The
71-year-old has also somehow found
the time to play a significant role in
shaping Idaho's educational policies, as
a longtime member of the state Board
of Education.
Atchley estimates more than 95
percent of Idaho's potato production
can be traced back to a University of
Idaho laboratory. Before planting, UI
