EDITOR'S LETTER
Happy New Year!
2022 is still in the rearview mirror, but after what feels like an
arduous year, some of us are happy to see it behind us. As 2023 rolls
in with new goals, ideas, and inevitably new rules, how the growing
season goes is anyone's guess. But farmers are
inherently risk-takers. All we can really do is
prepare for it as best as we can regardless of the
various possibilities.
A new year surely means new starts, but it also
means there's carryover from the previous year.
Challenges know no timelines and don't care for
reasonable deadlines.
This month, we take a look at the state of
the industry with the help of National Potato
Council and a Washington state farmer and exporter (Page 8). It's a
look at last year's celebrated accomplishments while simultaneously
getting poised to tackle the challenges of this upcoming year.
Juxtaposed with an organic farmer in Maine (Page 14), we can see
that even if things seem tense at the regional or federal levels, there
are growers who are seeing a spike in business that they weren't
quite expecting.
And, of course, what is farming in this day and age without a little
research and tech? We revisit some important research about plant
spacing and increased yields, as now the next phase will begin this
year and focus on irrigated acres (Page 36).
Potato Expo proved to be another great kick-off to a new year.
It was great to see and meet so many of the people to make this
industry thrive.
