The season is getting well underway. And what would be
the farming season without having to contend with legislative
challenges while also trying to compromise with Mother Nature?
Oftentimes, one of these is born from
the other.
But, farmers gonna farm. (Despite those choice

mutterings under your breath, while you're
out in the field, where no one can hear you.)
And armed with the best tools, research and
shared information learned from the collective
experience, it only makes sense that the industry
will continue to simultaneously feed a growing
population and be stewards of the land while
facing these uphill battles.
There's the juxtaposition of both situations in this very magazine
issue. Like most of the Western states, Idaho is experiencing
contention around its water issues, and farmers could face zero
allocations. There's also the ramp up of farmer advocates in terms
of the farm bill, ensuring that the voices that need to be heard are,
in fact, heard. Back home on the ground, there are concentrated
efforts to improve farm soils, and this runs the gamut from multistate
projects to exploring alternatives for historical nitrogen
application rates, using biostimulants, and knowing that we can't
really negotiate with the rain, regardless of how hard we try.
As we launch into this season, may your tried and true practices
continue to be faithful. But as agriculture continues on its shift in
a new direction, may the new things that you try prove to be well
worth the effort.
