Scottish Nuffield Scholar
studies connectivity in seed
potato supply chain

ach year, the Nuffield Farming
Scholarship Trust awards
life-changing scholarships to
approximately 20 applicants who are
looking to broaden their horizons
through study and travel while
developing farming and agricultural
industries.
Claire Hodge received a scholarship
in 2018, and her journey led her to
explore how connectivity in the potato
industry impacts farming systems. More
specifically, Hodge wanted to identify
strategic partnerships and factors that
enhance connectivity through the potato
supply chain. Since completing her
scholarship, she's published a lengthy
paper titled " Improving connectivity
in the seed potato supply chain "
that outlines her findings. Hodge's
journey offers lessons for growers and
agribusinesses both home and abroad.
During the first part of her
scholarship, Hodge's destinations
included Kenya, India, Brazil, Chile,
the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and the
U.S. Her aim was to speak with experts
across the supply chain in both emerging
and established markets, and to explore
different supply chain frameworks.
When speaking with Hodge, her
passion for the subjects of connectivity
and advancing technology and
innovation is clear. Until 2021, she was
able to explore this passion in her role
as senior knowledge exchange manager
for arable crops at the Agriculture
and Horticulture Development Board
(AHDB) in Scotland. When AHDB's
potato levy board was voted obsolete in
March of 2021, she moved on to a new
role as head of crops at Agri-Epicentre.
She now works with global technology
companies to build solutions that
address challenges within the
agricultural sector.
Hodge began learning about the
importance of connectivity while
working both at the UK's Potato
Council and later at AHDB, well before
her Nuffield Scholarship-funded travels.
" Throughout my travels, I observed
that connectivity was not just about the
framework of the supply chain, but also,
most importantly, about the mindset
of the people within it, " she said. " I
found that the global potato industry is
full of opportunities and is constantly
expanding in its ability to connect. "
While the UK has a complex supply
chain that produces a consistent market,
Hodge observed that often the chain was
linear instead of circular, and she felt
there was room for improvement. It was
her hope that travelling could give some
insight into what improvements would
be most suitable for Scotland's seed
potato supply chain.
" I felt that Scotland, a country growing
quality potato seed, was seen in high
regard, " Hodge said. " But how do you
keep modernizing and developing those
sectors to stay ahead? And how do you
maintain that market leader position? "
To better understand where Scotland
stood internationally and what its
market advantages were, Hodge set
out on her travels to evaluate the global
seed potato supply chains and see
where the UK stacked up - and where
improvements could be made. She
