Injury Rehabilitation
" The injury experience consists of three components: mental and physical
losses, rehab/recovery, and return to competition. "
REHAB AND RECOVERY
Rehab is the physical act of healing, rebuilding
strength, and increasing range of motion. Recovery
can be viewed as the mending of body and mind as
the athlete prepares to return to competition. For many
athletes, rehab and recovery are the most challenging
aspects of the injury experience. Therefore, managing
pain and anxiety is of utmost importance.
In terms of rehabbing an injury, the athlete should
follow the recommendations of the doctor and physical
therapist. Setting goals with a physical therapist will keep
the athlete focused on rehabbing and provide reasonable
targets to gauge progress.
The mental issues of injury recovery also need to be
addressed:
Obstacles/ Setbacks - The athlete should understand
the possibility of setbacks during rehab. Being
prepared can take the sting out of setbacks. Setbacks
are temporary. If the athlete sees setbacks as major
obstacles, recovery will be delayed and the athlete may
inspire injured athletes.
CONCLUSION
As traumatic as injuries can be, many positives can
benefit the athlete long term:
*
Learning new mental skills
* Expanding identity outside of sports
* Finding new interests or hobbies
* Reigniting a passion for sport
* Reevaluating past performances
* Taking a break from the grind
* Gaining perspective on life and sports
* Learning coping skills to manage future stress
*
Building resilience/mental toughness
Just as the old African proverb states " It takes a village to
raise a child, " it also takes a caring support team to help an
injured athlete fully recover. n
