" Aquatic training is a great alternative to strength
training because you can mimic a lot of the movements
and exercises that you do in the weight room, " Johnson
said. " Obviously, the resistance is not the same, but I
think there's times during training where you're deloading
in the weight room where the pool would be a great
alternative. But I just think the pool in general - aquatic
training is great for flexibility, for a range of motion and
it's a very low-impact form of training. With that in mind,
you can do sprint training, conditioning, you can do some
form of resistance training and recovery - from injuries,
practice, and competition. "
And, believe it or not, the regenerative properties of
water are another reason Friesen turns to the pool.
" We've also found with these big salt tanks that [the
water] is good for tissue regeneration, " he said. " So [the
water] serves three purposes. With tissue regeneration,
that's a big deal now with athletes now with all the things
we're trying to get to use to normalize their body as
quickly as possible. "
While the pool is being utilized more than when
Johnson and Friesen entered the field, it still tends to
be underutilized. Sometimes there's the issue of pool
availability, which can be out of a strength coach's hands.
But with the constant development of new products that
can address the same functions and issues the water
does, pools can be overlooked - despite being a cheaper
option that can be effective for athletic training in a
multitude of ways.
" If you have an athlete who has a stress fracture and
they can't run, we can put them in those AlterG treadmills
or we can put them in the swimming pools, " Friesen said.
" And I believe - and it's not because of the expense
- but you can get in the swimming pool and actually
normalize the movement way better with deep-end
running than you can on an AlterG. Then as they get
fitter and fitter, you can start going into shallower waters
and they can start doing an active range of motion and
plyometrics, or you can actually make it very resisted,
depending on what you want to get out of that exercise
- all in a supportive environment, and that gives the
athlete confidence.
" If properly used, you can not only develop (an
athlete's) proprioception, strength, and range of motion
(through aquatic training), but you also develop their
visual and vestibular motor systems to make a complete
rehabilitation with an athlete. It's a great stepping stone
to normalize their activity. " n
