Sports Injuries
Which Injuries Are ATCs
Treating the Most?

..njuries happen in sports. There is no way around
..it. We can prepare our athletes for competition. We
..can be proactive with injury prevention techniques.
However, there is no fool-proof method that can
guarantee an athlete won't get injured.
Most sports injuries are due to either trauma or overuse
of muscles and joints. And the majority are caused by
minor trauma involving muscles, ligaments, tendons or
bones, like sprains, strains and bruises.
Keeping athletes healthy, and rehabilitating the
nicks and cuts that come along the way of an athletic
competitive season. That's where athletic trainers come
into the equation.
Training & Conditioning Magazine asked athletic trainers
across the country what injuries they are seeing most in the
field and what are the biggest issues facing the industry
currently. Of the sports medicine professionals who took part
in the survey, 55 percent were athletic trainers, 35 percent
were strength coaches, 7 percent were sports doctors, and
24 percent held other titles ranging from physical therapists
to personal trainers to corrective exercise specialists.
Seventy-five percent of respondents said they worked
with high school athletes, and 58 percent said they
worked with student body sizes of roughly 100 or more
student-athletes.
Below is a snapshot of those results.

MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES KEEP ATCS THE
BUSIEST
Nearly 100 percent of respondents all agree: sprains,
strains and tears are the most common injuries that have
student-athletes entering the trainer's room. Whether it is
hamstring strains, groin pulls, tennis elbow, musculoskeletal
injuries accounted for 96.5 percent of the response.
Head injuries, including concussions, were the next
most frequent injury treated, garnering 34.5 percent of
the response. Broken or fractured bones were third (24%)
while dislocations were fourth (21%).
Digging a little deeper into the data we found the
most frequent musculoskeletal injury to be the hamstring
strain, with 76 percent of the responses. Ankle/Achilles'
Tendon sprains, shin splints, and patellofemoral syndrome
were the second-most common musculoskeletal injuries
with 62 percent of the response. Groin pulls accounted
for 52 percent of response while rotator cuff injuries and
ACL injuries received 45 percent of the response.
Other trainers wrote in additional musculoskeletal
injuries like neck and lower back pain, IT band, hip bursitis
and hip girdle dysfunctions.
