erhaps one of the best parts about
this job is the relatively unlimited
access to people who are experts
in the fields of strength and conditioning,
nutrition, and sports medicine. It's always
a great thing when you can take your
work home with you and apply it in your
day-to-day life.
The same can be said for all the other
resources, not just the people. Reviewing
old articles and issues, seeing how the
fitness fads fade away over time (that is
why there is an 'e' at the end of fad, after
all), and being near the tip of the spear of cutting-edge breakthroughs in
the field of sports medicine and human performance.
Much like how the information shared with me has helped greatly in my
personal life, I hope the information we share regularly can help in yours
as well.
Below are a couple of my favorites.
* Focus on Fundamentals - " My programming philosophy is very
similar to what I did at the college level. Every athlete starts with
the fundamentals, and I keep it pretty basic. After they learn the
fundamentals, we might get a little more specialized, but my program
is not as sport-specific as when I was in college, " said Mark Asanovich,
former NFL and NCAAF strength coach.
* Peer Coaching - " I'm big on the idea of peer coaching. Within our
structure, I might have a class of 80 kids divided into groups of eight
- four of whom may have been in my class before, while the rest are
newcomers. I ask the older four to take the younger athletes under their
wings. We have them remind the younger athletes about good form
and how we record our lifts. As a result, our younger athletes feel like
someone is looking out for them, while the veterans learn leadership
skills and become better at executing the movements through teaching
them, " Kevin Vanderbush, 2008 Samson Equipment High School
Strength Coach of the Year.
* Make Sure Everyone is in Alignment - " Most schools have athletic
and separate physical education programs. You'll want to ensure the
school's athletic development program is drilled down vertically, and
that everyone is in alignment. We wrote a flow chart development
plan, starting with what we wanted students to be able to accomplish
in second grade up to what we wanted to see them do in 12th grade, "
said Gary McChalicher, former high school football coach and CSCS.
In this month's issue - The Strength & Conditioning Issue - we feature
the country's best weight rooms and training facilities in our inaugural
Strength Training Facilities of Excellence series. We also share the results
from our first-ever strength coaches survey, where we asked you what
matters most in your industry.
Enjoy this month's issue! n
